Graplr key art

Key art for an infinite runner game.

client: Codeglue

background
My friends at Codeglue had been working on a new prototype and approached me to do some key art for their title. It would have been an infinite runner where the player would move through the world by grappling from one fast vehicle to the next, scoring points along the way.

visual development
There was no defined backstory or visual genre, but Codeglue suggested a lived-in world and I was immediately reminded of Mad Max. However, unlike the dreary apocalyptic setting of that series, it was important that this world felt fun and cozy.

I opted for a retro ice-cream shop colorpalette, with lots of subdued pinks and peach, with pale blues and greens for contrast. The architectural elements were an eclectic mix of different styles, creating a sense of a lived-in and cobbled-together universe.

For the character avatars they wanted the players to customize them after movies, holiday themes, super hero IPs, etc, so I added in a version of X-Men’s Storm, Batman, and a Halloween pumpkin outfit.
